Bhaichung Bhutia impressed by ISL hype
The Indian Super League is set to begin later this year and Bhutia is impressed by the attention its getting.
Former Indian national team captain Bhaichung Bhutia has been impressed by the hype the Indian Super League (ISL) has generated so far. The league which is a joint venture of IMG-Reliance and Star India is scheduled to start in September. Speaking at the Football Players Association of India (FPAI) Indian Football Awards night held in Kolkata on Tuesday, Bhaichung said, "It's great that it (ISL) has been able to make headlines even before the first match. It's amazing to see something about Indian football making so much hype. I am also looking forward to the matches."
Reflecting on the existing I-League which reached this season's conclusion last week, the three-time Indian Player of the Year was sad to see Mohammedan Sporting go down but was impressed by Bengaluru FC who clinched the title in their first ever season.
"It's very sad to hear that a team like Mohammedan has been relegated. They have a rich history of their own. Talking about Bengaluru, they have been impressive from the start. We have to wait to see whether more franchisee teams come to the league," he opined.
The Sikkimese born striker also spoke briefly on his transition from football to the world of politics.
"The election campaigning was a big lesson for me. I met a lot of people and understood their problems," he stated.
