Mohammedan Sporting sign Taro Hasegawa to complete their foreign contingent
The Japanese striker joins the century old Kolkata club on the eve of their all-important IFA Shield final match.
Mohammedan Sporting have signed Japanese footballer Taro Hasegawa to fill the void left by Australian forward Tolgay Ozbey.The new member of the squad was on trial for the last couple of days and has been selected by coach Sanjoy Sen for the second half of the I-League.
With this signing, the Black and Whites have now roped in a player of Asian origin with Taro joining Josimar Da Silva Martins, Luciano Sobrosa and Penn Orji, they have completed their foreign quota.
Taro appeared in the J-League for Ventforet Kofu and had played a key role in earning the promotion to the highest tier of Japanese football back in 2005.
Since then, he had short stints in a number of Japanese clubs including second division outfits Yokohama FC and Tokushima Vortis.
However, a downward turn in the performance graph after 2010 had forced him to settle in the lower division teams and his last stint was in the Kanto Soccer League.
"I have last played for Urayasu SC there," the new signing informed Goal after completion of the transfer process in the evening.
However, the fact that Urayasu is a club playing in the second division of a regional league in Japan means Taro may have to perform at a much higher level in the competitive set-up of the current I-League season.
Interestingly back in 2002, Taro had played in Albirex Niigata with Ryuji Sueoka, the East Bengal footballer.
Mohammedan completed the signing only a day before their very important clash against Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club of Bangladesh in the IFA Shield final, as they hope to win the second silverware of the season with Durand Cup being the first.
